STARTORUS Fusion Completes World’s First Full-Scale High-Temperature Superconducting Magnet Test, with Shanghai Superconductor Supplying All REBCO Tapes
2026-06-11
Recently, STARTORUS Fusion successfully completed the excitation test of its self-developed full-scale toroidal field magnet under a 20 K cryogenic environment, achieving a current of 4.5 kA. As the world’s first full-scale high-temperature superconducting toroidal field magnet designed for spherical tokamak fusion reactors, the magnet demonstrates an engineering current density (including the coil case) exceeding 40 A/mm² and a current density of 375 A/mm². Its stable performance has been repeatedly validated through multiple tests.
Shanghai Superconductor supplied all the REBCO tapes(wires) for the magnet. The magnet's consistent stable performance across multiple tests further validates the high reliability of Shanghai Superconductor's REBCO tapes(wires) under complex operating conditions, providing robust material-level support for the engineering realization of fusion-reactor-grade magnets.
