On Its 15th Anniversary, Shanghai Superconductor's Second-Generation HTS Tape and Headquarters Base Project Completes Topping-Out of All Main Buildings
2026-10-18

On October 18, 2026, as Shanghai Superconductor celebrates its 15th anniversary, the company's second-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape and headquarters base project reached a key milestone: all main buildings have been topped out. This marks the official transition of the project—currently the largest planned-capacity project in the global superconducting field—from construction to production-line assembly and equipment commissioning, and signals the company's entry into a new stage of large-scale industrial manufacturing.

The Shanghai Superconductor Second-Generation HTS Tape Production and Headquarters Base Project is a major Shanghai municipal project for 2025. Construction began on June 29, 2025, making it the first major industrial project in Zhangjiang Science City to achieve "land acquisition upon signing and certificate issuance upon land delivery." Located in the East Zone of Kangqiao Industrial Park, Shanghai, the project covers 92.62 mu and consists of four main buildings—Plant 1, Plant 2, a dormitory building and a production support building—along with ancillary structures such as a Class B warehouse and a switching station. As the world's first large-scale industrial HTS tape production and R&D headquarters base, it is designed with an annual capacity of 15,000 km. Once fully operational, Shanghai Superconductor's total capacity will rise to 20,000 km per year, ranking first in the global second-generation HTS tape segment.

At present, Shanghai Superconductor has an annual capacity of 4,000 km (12 mm) and is one of only two HTS tape companies worldwide with actual annual shipments exceeding 1,000 km. Over the past 15 years, through independently developed equipment, optimized processes and quality control, the company has completed the leap from laboratory R&D to mass production of HTS tape and has participated in the supply of multiple large domestic and international projects involving controlled fusion magnets, user-grade HTS magnets, high-field HTS magnets and HTS cables. Outstanding product performance, high consistency in mass production, stable supply capability and comprehensive supporting services have earned Shanghai Superconductor the recognition and trust of its customers.

3-kilometer-long HTS tape
Notably, the Phase III base will operate the world's first production line for 3-kilometer-long HTS tape, with products scheduled to roll off the line in the first quarter of 2027. The 3-kilometer-long HTS tape can significantly reduce the number of joints in downstream applications and improve system reliability, providing a better material foundation for applications such as large magnet winding and long-distance HTS cable installation, and driving HTS materials from "usable" to "easy to use."

The topping-out of the new base is both an important milestone in Shanghai Superconductor's development and a new starting point for tape R&D and large-scale industrial production. Leveraging the new base's scaled capacity and advanced technologies, Shanghai Superconductor will continue to pursue independent innovation, deepen R&D in HTS materials and technologies, and further consolidate and expand its leading position in the global HTS tape industry—contributing core strength to the development of strategic emerging industries and the nation's major strategic needs, and helping to open a new chapter in the large-scale industrial application of the global HTS industry.
