China’s First 3-Phase Coaxial Superconducting Cable Officially Put into Operation in Shenzhen

2021-09-29

On September 28, 2021, China’s first independently developed 10kV 3-phase coaxial high-temperature superconducting (HTS) AC cable was officially put into operation in Shenzhen. This project, a major scientific and technological initiative undertaken by the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau of China Southern Power Grid, supplies power to important users, including the Ping An Finance Center, a landmark building in Shenzhen. As the world’s first superconducting cable demonstration project applied in a high-load-density power supply area, it signifies that China has fully mastered the complete set of key technologies for the design, manufacturing, and construction of 3-phase coaxial superconducting cables.

Shanghai Superconductor was the sole supplier of second-generation HTS tapes for this project, completing the delivery in February 2021, which laid a solid foundation for the construction and operation of the project. Looking ahead, Shanghai Superconductor will continue to adhere to the concept of technological innovation, persist in scientific and technological breakthroughs, and provide first-class products and technical services for various fields, including superconducting cables, superconducting maglev, controlled nuclear fusion, superconducting induction heating, superconducting current limiters, superconducting motors, and superconducting energy storage.
