New Record with 35.1T Fully Superconducting Magnet, Showcasing Another Achievement for Shanghai Superconductor's Tape!

2025-09-26

On September 26th in Hefei, a large-bore fully superconducting magnet utilizing HTS tape supplied by Shanghai Superconductor, jointly developed by several top-tier research institutions, set a new world record of 35.1 Tesla. During the experiment, the magnet was energized to 35.1 tesla, stably operated for 30 minutes, and was safely demagnetized, fully verifying the reliability of the technical approach, awaiting the next round of extreme testing.

Upon the announcement, this groundbreaking achievement was successively reported by media outlets including CCTV News and Xinhua News Agency. It represents a significant milestone in the international field of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets, fully demonstrating China's advanced capabilities in the realms of materials and magnet technology.

The achieved field strength of 35.1T represents a magnetic intensity approximately 702,000 times stronger than Earth's natural magnetic field. At this level, the theoretical force exerted over just 0.01 square meters could support a mass of 500 metric tons. Such extreme magnetic forces demand exceptional performance from HTS materials.

Shanghai Superconductor's sustained commitment to HTS tape development has yielded not only enhanced electrical properties but also superior mechanical characteristics, significantly improving real-world applicability. Shanghai Superconductor's mass-produced HTS tape has consistently enabled record-breaking performances across various magnet configurations and extreme-field validation tests worldwide. Concurrently, magnets wound with Shanghai Superconductor's HTS tapes at MagLab (US) have demonstrated unprecedented performance stability, is the first magnet that survived the >40T quench. These results have been independently verified across multiple magnet systems using different production batches.

The successful energization of this 35.1T represents both a critical advancement in ultra-high-field all-superconducting magnet technology and a powerful demonstration of Shanghai Superconductor's capacity for volume production of high-performance HTS tape. Through extensive validation processes, Shanghai Superconductor's mass-production tapes have consistently met rigorous testing standards across multiple protocols and extended durations.

In the future, Shanghai Superconductor remains committed to technological innovation, performance optimization, and scaled manufacturing capabilities, thereby strengthening the materials foundation for next-generation applications in high-field research, controlled nuclear fusion, and superconducting power systems.
