On March 30, Zhu Jiamin, president of Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., LTD., was successfully selected as MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 China. He was also awarded the "Entrepreneurs" medal in recognition of his development of high temperature superconductor tape, the founding of Shanghai Superconductor Company and the promotion of high temperature superconductivity technology in the fields of compact nuclear fusion, superconducting power, high field magnets and other innovative applications.

Zhu Jiamin, President of Shanghai Superconductor, was selected as MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 China

Among the "35 Innovators Under 35" (TR35) China, 33 people are from leading universities and 2 people from high-tech innovators, all of whom are innovators under 35 in fields such as computing, biology and life sciences, chemistry, physics, materials, semiconductors and quantum computing. Zhu Jiamin is the only local private enterprise selected, which will bring wider attention to the development and commercial application of the superconductor industry.

The reasons he was selected: He led the team to develop HTS tapes with high engineering critical current density and achieved mass preparation, providing key raw materials for the development of controlled nuclear fusion engineering to compact.**

Zhu Jiamin is one of the founders of Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., LTD. After more than ten years of efforts, he led the team to strive on the core equipment localization, product process quality improvement and practical technology research and then achieved the mass production of this kind of high-performance superconductor tape.

MIT Technology Review Official Report

He has developed a complete production line of second generation HTS tape. He proposed the asymmetric auxiliary heating technology for pulsed laser deposition equipment for the first time and invented non-contact forced instantaneous cooling technology in tape packaging. These technology breakthroughs solved the problem of HTS tape mass production.

Zhu Jiamin has also developed test platforms and methods for key performance indicators of superconductor tape and built a comprehensive process quality system. He has invented a second-generation HTS tape industrial joint with the lowest resistance in the world and realized industrial production, solving the problem of limited tape length, overcoming the long-term problems of the industry such as tape overcurrent burning, impregnation performance degradation, stainless steel packaging problems.

In addition, he also developed low-cost tape structure for power applications and high engineering critical current density tape structure for compact fusion magnets, which solved the practical problems of HTS tapes and promoted the development of superconductor on heavy current applications.

At present, Shanghai Superconductor led by Zhu Jiamin has provided raw materials for major projects such as the world's three highest voltage superconducting current limiters, the world's first megawatt induction heating device, the total superconducting steady-state magnet with the world's highest magnetic field and the world's first 35kV km-level high temperature superconductor cable.

Of particular concern is that the high engineering critical current density REBCO high temperature superconductor tape developed by Zhu Jiamin became key raw material for the compact fusion 20T magnet developed by MIT-CFS. At the same time, this compact fusion technology is also one of the "Top 10 global breakthrough Technologies" by MIT Technology Review in 2021.

Among the 16 international enterprises, Shanghai Superconductor is one of the only two companies that currently can produce high Je tape on 30μm thin substrate and the only one that have developed superconductor tapes based on 25μm thin substrate, which is another step forward for the ultimate dream of human energy.
