Shanghai Superconductor Showcased at 2026 Fusion Energy Conference, Powering Controlled Fusion with Mass-Produced High-Performance HTS Tapes

On August 25, the 2026 Fusion Energy Conference and Fusion Activity Week grandly opened in Shanghai under the theme "Innovation for Fusion, Fusion for the Future", bringing together over 1,800 experts, scholars, and industry representatives from across China to discuss the latest advances and future development paths in fusion energy research.
At the conference, a Yangtze River Delta Innovation Consortium — led by China Fusion Energy Co., Ltd. and joined by Shanghai Superconductor, Dongbu Superconductor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group, Supermag Energy Technology, Energy Singularity, Hangyang Group, and Yixi Technology — will focus on the requirements of the HL-4 fusion device to build HTS high-field tokamak magnet R&D capabilities and engineering technology systems. The goal is to complete the first 25T HTS high-field magnet R&D and testing line by 2028 and finish prototype magnet development by 2030.
As a core member of the consortium, Shanghai Superconductor was honored to exhibit at this landmark fusion event and participated in the release of the HTS magnet development roadmap.
Over 15 years, Shanghai Superconductor has achieved the leap from lab-scale to mass production of HTS tapes, through self-developed equipment, process optimization, and quality control improvements, ultimately achieving stable industrial-scale manufacturing. The company has launched an expansion plan: Phase II was completed by the end of 2025, bringing total annual capacity to 4,000 km (12mm), and Phase III is underway, which will bring total capacity to 20,000 km (12mm) upon completion.
In terms of product consistency, Shanghai Superconductor has supplied or exclusively supplied multiple controlled fusion magnets, HTS user-level magnets, HTS high-field magnets, and HTS cable projects worldwide. Outstanding product performance, high consistency in mass production, stable supply capacity, and comprehensive services have earned the company recognition and trust from customers.
Looking ahead, Shanghai Superconductor will continue to leverage its core strengths in mass production, high performance, high consistency, and stable supply to provide solid HTS material support for controlled fusion and accelerate the development of the fusion energy industry.
