HTS Shunt Reactor Successfully Passed Type Test! Shanghai Superconductor Continues to Drive Innovation in Superconducting Applications
2025-07-31
Recently, the world’s first toroidal HTS shunt reactor, developed under the leadership of State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company and primarily undertaken by Shanghai Yixi Technology, has successfully passed the type test. Rated at 10 kV with a capacity of 1 Mvar, this project represents one of China’s latest R&D achievements in superconducting power equipment application and will be put into operation in Xuhui Central District of Shanghai.

Reactors are core equipment for ensuring the safe and stable operation of power grids. Traditional reactors face challenges such as large footprint, high energy loss and noise pollution. The newly developed HTS shunt reactor demonstrates superior performance with high power density, low energy loss, low operational noise (<60 dB) and a small footprint (<8 m²). Its comprehensive performance indicators are international-leading, making it ideal for retrofitting existing substations and installing new equipment in densely populated urban areas, effectively addressing reactive power compensation challenges while enhancing grid efficiency and stability.
Shanghai Superconductor collaborated closely with Yixi Technology on this project. As the core supplier of superconducting materials for the project, Shanghai Superconductor provided all the REBCO tapes required, delivering high-quality material support to ensure its smooth progress. Moving forward, Shanghai Superconductor will continue to work closely with customers to advance the R&D and technical innovation of HTS and magnet technology, supporting the construction and innovative development of more HTS applications.
