Delegation from Babcock Noell GmbH Visits Shanghai Superconductor
2017-03-17
On the morning of March 16, 2017, Dr. Wolfgang Adolf Walter, General Manager of the Magnet Division at Babcock Noell GmbH, Dr. Li Hongyou, Sales and Project Engineer for Nuclear Technology, and Michael Gehring, Sales General Manager of the Magnet Division, visited Shanghai Superconductor for an inspection and exchange. During the visit, Dr. Li Hongyou and his team gained an in-depth understanding of the tape performance and production processes at Shanghai Superconductor. After the tour, the delegation engaged in a detailed technical discussion with the company’s technical staff regarding high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. They also compared the advantages and disadvantages of first-generation and second-generation HTS tapes when used in high-field magnets. The delegation expressed the possibility of future collaboration with Shanghai Superconductor, with the aim of applying HTS magnets in large-scale scientific instruments such as particle colliders and accelerators.

Babcock Noell GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German engineering services giant Bilfinger SE. Its main business areas include nuclear services, nuclear technology, magnet technology, and environmental technology. In the early 20th century, Babcock Noell began developing large superconducting magnets for applications in high-energy physics and nuclear fusion. Currently, Babcock Noell is one of the suppliers of the accelerator ring magnets for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
